HSBC Expat report shines a positive light on island life.

Friday, 12 July 2019

The recently published 2019 edition of the HSBC Expat global survey features the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey for the first time, ranking them 25th and 19th respectively out of 33 expat destinations.

Both islands score highly for work/life balance – with Guernsey coming 4th and Jersey 11th – as expats and locals alike clearly appreciate the ways the islands balance the personal and the professional. This is hardly a surprise; there aren’t many places in the world where you can finish work, get home and be on a superb beach with your family in less than 15 minutes.

Guernsey fares well in other lifestyle measures too; coming 8th for quality of life and 12th for physical and mental wellbeing.

Stability was a key area of strength for the island as Guernsey’s political and economic stability were also recognised. The island finished ahead of the UK, the UAE and mainland China in these measures as its longstanding, independent political system was acknowledged as being a key driver for expat satisfaction.

In this period of rapid, drastic and unpredictable geopolitical change it is clearer than ever that stability contributes to a positive lifestyle and Guernsey offers a welcome antidote to the uncertainty that has plagued other countries.

At Livingroom our team of experts are in daily conversation with the whole spectrum of clients – from those who’ve lived in the islands all their lives to those who are considering relocation – and the message is clear: Guernsey offers an exceptional quality of life that competes with what’s on offer in far larger jurisdictions from around the world.

As the home-grown Channel Island estate agent we realise that each island is different and has its own benefits and qualities, if you’d like to learn more about what the islands have to offer then get in touch with our local team, who have more than 150 years’ combined experience of the islands’ property markets.

The HSBC Expat global survey was completed by 18,059 expats from 163 countries and territories via an online questionnaire in February and March. A minimum sample of 100 expat respondents is required for a country or territory to be included in the league table, with 33 qualifying in 2019.
